In the summer of 2022 I completed a fellowship in Brooklyn, NY for OSL, a non-profit that specializes in adaptive clothing for those with disabilities. Along with a team of other fellows we co-designed with collaborators who have spinal muscular dystrophy on adaptations to high glam runway looks to show at NYFW. Over a period of 2 months through Zoom myself and my partner conducted interviews, brainstorms, and fit sessions to develop the most accessible and flattering garments to suit each individuals needs.

An example of one of the garments was a pair of purple velvet suit pants for our collaborator Shane from the Youtube channel Squirmy and Grubs. Through our interviews we learned his SMA caused what is called contractures where his arms and legs are locked at the elbow and knee joints making it difficult to get easily in and out of long non stretch clothing as well as causing issues with pressure sores. To address this we talked with Shane and realized how the needs of standard pants which allow for movement was actually a hindrance to Shane's needs, so we had to completely rethink how pants should fit. We created pants that had two layers connected via snap closures. The bottom layer were tight fitting comfy stretch fabric pants that had specially placed darts to cause the pants to naturally be l-shaped with zippers along the ankle and calves to easily don them. The top layer were like chaps in that they didn't have a back up to the knees, although from the front they looked like regular dress pants. This top layer snapped onto the bottom layer and gave the look Shane was looking for without any of the discomfort.

Unlearning and Exploration in Design:

Transitioning from traditional design thinking to a more inclusive approach requires a significant shift. This involves unlearning preconceived notions about who garments are designed for and adopting a mindset that prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility.

Empowerment through Fashion:

Clothing is a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment. Designers have a responsibility to challenge societal limitations and create garments that allow everyone to feel included and empowered.

Versatility and Comfort of Knit Fabrics:

Knit fabrics offer versatility and comfort, which has become increasingly important in the post-COVID era, where casual and comfortable wear has gained popularity. There is an opportunity to innovate with knit fabrics, elevating them beyond casual wear to create stylish and sophisticated designs.

Exploring New Materials:

The fashion industry should continually explore new materials and design possibilities. This exploration can lead to the creation of innovative, comfortable, and stylish garments that meet the needs and preferences of a diverse range of consumers.
